“When you can no longer feel the life that you are, you are likely to try to fill up your life with things.” -Eckhart Tolle, author/spiritual teacher, from his latest book, A New Earth: Awakening to your Life's Purpose
I believe that on an intuitive level all human beings recognize their need for connection and oneness. However, after living in a culture that is driven by competition and disconnectedness we slowly find ourselves buying into it, feeling isolated and alone. Society tries to tell us what will make us happy and the media tries to sell it to us. Many people attempt this approach to happiness and fulfillment only to find themselves feeling anxious, depressed, or lonely. External measures of self-worth such as; money, looks, and career success, will only get us so far, without a true sense of connection within ourselves and with those around us we remain empty. The counseling process can be a path in which we begin to nurture these lost connections, an opportunity to gain self-awareness, aliveness, and enrich our relationships.
Mindfulness In Therapy:
I offer an eclectic approach to therapy, utilizing the model that best suits the client. Mindfulness is one of these models, one which is increasingly being used in Western psychology to alleviate various symptoms. This approach focuses on gaining a consciousness ‘in the now’; what we are experiencing, feeling, and thinking, and paying attention to these experiences non-judgmentally. Many individuals find themselves spending a great deal of time in the past or constantly thinking about the future. Mindfulness is about coming back to the present moment. This approach to counseling has been beneficial in treating depression, anxiety, overall stress-reduction and well being.
